Arvo Pärt – Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten; The Beatitudes; Gustav Mahler – Adagietto from Symphony No. 5; Paul Carr – Seven Last Words from The Cross (World Premiere)
Kevin Greenlaw – Baritone
Gavin Carr, Conductor
Paul Carr’s Requiem for an Angel, which we performed in 2011, is a frequent choice on Classic FM and has been their CD of the week. In this new work for baritone, chorus and orchestra, commissioned by Bath Minerva Choir, the composer responds to the seven last words of Jesus on the cross in seven contrasting movements.
The first half of the programme is a musical meditation framing Arvo Pärt’s haunting setting of The Beatitudes, words from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Pärt’s Cantus appropriately commemorates Britten in his centenary year, and the sequence ends with perhaps Mahler’s best loved movement for harp and strings.
