Mozart – Vesperae solennes de confessore
Haydn – Missa in angustiis ‘Nelson Mass’
Our Spring concert takes place in the beautiful setting of St Swithin’s Church. We join with the Bristol Ensemble to perform Haydn’s greatest Mass, Missa in angustiis (‘Mass for anxious times’). Commonly known as the ‘Nelson’ Mass, this towering expression of Haydn’s genius has drama in abundance, and great flair in the solo and choral writing. Memorable themes, joyous fugues, dance-like rhythms – this Mass has everything: starting in high drama fit for our times, it ends with Haydn at his most positive. The programme begins with Mozart’s superb Vespers setting, typical of his highest inspiration, featuring one of his most sublime melodies, the ineffable ‘Laudate Dominum’ for soprano solo and choir.
